Heavyweight city journal the Financial Times joined the debate on water-saving this week with an interesting article about the role of water meters. Read the full article here.
FT journalist, Steve Lodge suggested that unmetered costs for typical households will be around £347 for 2008/9 and cited water meters as one of the potential ways to cut these costs - giving consumers more control over what they pay.
The FT quoted both Savewatersavemoney.co.uk and Uswitch.com as backing the generally held view that meters can be a way to support a reduction in both water usage and costs. Households are entitled to free meter installation. Those who switch also have the right to go back to bills based on rateable value within 12 months if they are unhappy, or are not saving money.
As ever, pulling no punches, the FT queried whether these savings would work equally for all sizes of household and whether the savings would hold up over time.
