Water Saving Down Under

Goals Achievable

Further evidence that significant water saving by householders is achievable with the right communication and advice came from Melbourne this week.

Figures for January - March 2008 water usage showed a general decrease in usage of nearly 15% when contrasted with the same period last year. Some boroughs such as holiday haven Portsea managed to reduce usage by as much as 40%. Even inner-city suburbs such as North Melbourne managed to save around 30%.

Australians have been subjected to water efficiency messages for many years now, but these latest savings are on the back of specific encouragement and advice as well as new restrictions and offers of rebates to households that install rainwater tanks.

Despite climactic differences, advice here in the UK is much the same - get a water efficient shower head installed, reduce shower time, reuse grey water where you can, repair leaks and keep water efficiency front of mind. If we all act, some of the more draconian measures necessary in Melbourne, such as different water usage rights for odd and even numbered houses for different days of the week, can be avoided here in the UK.
